Imogen Heap and I got off on the wrong foot. Due to some strange, completely unknown, twist of fate, I ended up hating Hide and Seek when I first heard it. Her truly terrible cover of Hallelujah put the nail in the coffin; I was not a fan. And then I ended up hearing the Goodnight and Go single, and in particular the b-side Speeding Cars. The song got looped and looped until I knew it perfectly and then it got played some more. Song by song, I came round to Imogen Heap, until “Speak for Yourself” was pretty much the only album I would listen to for about three weeks.
I was doing my fortnightly-ish check of Kanye West’s blog, and I found the video to what I hoped was a new Imogen Heap track; Canvas. Sure enough, it is a new track; a downtempo, electronic, worldly ambient, and melancholically-melodic, classic from the aforementioned. This time round I feel rather content to be enjoying it all on first listen. IGIF has the mp3, and now all the excitement centres on this August-based ‘Ellipse’ full-length.
